What Is an MLA Citation Generator?

An MLA citation generator is a tool that turns raw source details into finished citations written in Modern Language Association (MLA) format. You give it the facts about a source — author, title, publisher, date, URL — and it arranges those facts into the exact order, punctuation, and formatting the MLA Handbook requires.

The MLA Handbook, now in its 9th edition, sets the rules for how these citations look. Getting that formatting right by hand takes time and a good eye for detail. A single misplaced comma or italicized word in the wrong spot counts as an error. The generator handles the placement so you can focus on the writing.

Two kinds of citations come out of the tool:

Works Cited entries — the full references listed at the end of your paper.

In-text citations — the short author-and-page notes that go inside your sentences.

Both point readers to the same source. The in-text note is the shorthand; the Works Cited entry is the full record.

Who Uses an MLA Citation Generator?

Students in middle school, high school, and college use MLA citation generators most, because MLA is the citation style English and humanities teachers assign first. A ninth-grade literature essay, a college composition paper, a research project on a novel — these lean on MLA.

MLA also shows up outside the classroom. Literature scholars, language researchers, and writers in cultural studies cite their sources in MLA format. Journals in these fields ask contributors to follow MLA rules.

Anyone quoting or borrowing from an outside source needs a citation for it. That includes:

The style spreads beyond MLA users too. Once you know how to cite one source correctly, the habit carries into APA, Chicago, and any other style you meet later.

Why Use an MLA Citation Generator?

Manual citation is slow and easy to get wrong. Every source type has its own rule, and the rules change between MLA editions. Type all of that out by hand across a 15-source paper, and mistakes creep in — a wrong date format here, a missing container title there.

Your Works Cited page counts toward the grade on most MLA papers. Clean, correctly ordered citations protect those marks. A generator that follows the official MLA Handbook removes the guesswork.

How to Use the MLA Citation Generator

To cite a source, follow four steps:

  1. 1

    Pick the source type.

Choose what you are citing — a book, website, journal article, YouTube video, and so on — from the source selector at the top of the page.

  2. 2

    Enter the source.

Paste a URL, ISBN, or DOI to pull the details automatically, or type the author, title, and date into the citation form yourself.

  3. 3

    Generate the citation.

The tool formats the details into a finished MLA citation, ready to read and copy.

  4. 4

    Copy or save.

Copy the citation straight into your document, or save it to a reference list you can download later as a full Works Cited page.

The autocite feature does the heavy lifting on step two. Feed it a link or an ISBN and it fetches the author, title, publisher, and date for you, so you rarely type a full citation from scratch.

How to Cite in MLA Format

MLA format organizes source information into a repeatable pattern. Learn the pattern once and every citation falls into place.

MLA Works Cited List

The Works Cited list is the alphabetized set of full citations at the end of your paper. Each entry starts at the left margin, and every line after the first indents half an inch — a hanging indent. Entries sit in alphabetical order by the author's last name.

A standard MLA 9 Works Cited entry follows this order:

Not every source fills every slot. Leave out any element the source does not have.

Author. "Title of Source." Title of Container, Other Contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication Date, Location.

MLA In-Text Citations

An MLA in-text citation names the author and the page where you found the material, inside parentheses: (Smith 42). Place it right after the quote or idea you borrowed. The author's last name points readers to the full entry on your Works Cited page, and the page number sends them to the exact spot.

When you name the author in your sentence, the parenthetical needs only the page number: Smith argues the opposite (42).

Sources With No Page Numbers

Cite a source with no page numbers — a website, a video — by the author's last name alone: (Chen). Skip page numbers entirely rather than guessing at them. If the source numbers its paragraphs or sections, cite those instead: (Chen, par. 4).

Missing Information in MLA Citations

Real sources often lack an author, a date, or a publisher. When a piece is missing, leave its slot out and move to the next element — do not write "n.a." or invent a placeholder. A web page with no listed author starts with its title instead. A source with no date simply carries no date.

The 9 Components of an MLA Citation

MLA 9 builds every citation from nine ordered components, called the core elements. You work through them in order, filling each one your source provides and skipping each one it lacks.

Author

The author comes first, last name before first: Morrison, Toni. For two authors, invert only the first name and add the second normally: Morrison, Toni, and Zadie Smith. For three or more, name the first author and add "et al."

Title of Source

The title of the source comes second. Italicize the titles of whole works — books, films, whole websites. Put the titles of shorter pieces inside a larger work — articles, poems, episodes — in quotation marks.

Title of Container

The container is the larger work that holds your source. A journal article's container is the journal. A song's container is the album. A web page's container is the website. Italicize the container title.

Other Contributors

List people beyond the author who shaped the work — editors, translators, illustrators, directors. Name their role first: edited by, translated by, directed by.

Version

Record the version if the source names one — a book's second edition, a director's cut of a film, an updated app release.

Number

Add the number that locates the source in a sequence — a journal's volume and issue, a book's volume, a TV episode's season and episode.

Publisher

Name the organization that produced the source — a book's publisher, a website's parent company, a film's studio.

Publication Date

Give the date the source came out. Match the level of detail the source provides: a year for a book, a full day-month-year for a newspaper article or blog post.

Location

Location tells readers where to find the source. For a print source, that is a page range: pp. 45-60. For an online source, it is a URL or DOI.

Optional Elements

Add extra details when they help a reader find or judge the source — a date of access for an online page, an original publication date for a reprint, a series name.

How to Format an MLA Paper

MLA rules cover the whole paper, not just the citations. A properly formatted MLA paper follows these settings.

Font and Spacing

Use a readable font at 12 point — Times New Roman is the standard pick. Double-space the entire paper, including the Works Cited list. Add no extra space between paragraphs.

Heading and Title

MLA uses no separate title page. Put a four-line heading at the top left of the first page — your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date, each on its own line. Center the title below the heading. Use no bold, no underline, no oversized font on the title.

Page Numbers

Number every page in the top right corner, half an inch from the top. Put your last name before the number: Garcia 3. The number runs continuously from the first page through the Works Cited list.

Works Cited Page Setup

Start the Works Cited list on a new page. Center the title "Works Cited" at the top, with no bold or quotation marks. Double-space the list, alphabetize by author's last name, and give every entry a hanging indent.

MLA 9th Edition vs. MLA 8th Edition

MLA 9 (2021) keeps the core system MLA 8 introduced and adds guidance rather than replacing it. The nine core elements stay the same, so a citation correct in MLA 8 stays correct in MLA 9.

Fuller formatting guidance

Clear rules for headings, page layout, and the Works Cited page that MLA 8 left thin.

Inclusive language notes

Advice on bias-free writing.

More examples

Expanded models for sources MLA 8 barely covered, such as social media posts and annotated bibliographies.

In-text citation detail

More direction on citing sources without page numbers and works with many authors.

For most papers, an MLA 8 citation and an MLA 9 citation read the same. The generator writes both, so pick the edition your teacher assigns.

Avoid Plagiarism in Your Paper

Citations do more than tick a box. They separate your ideas from borrowed ones and give credit to the writers you drew from. Skip them and you risk plagiarism, whether you meant to or not.

What Is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is presenting someone else's words or ideas as your own. It ranges from copying a paragraph word-for-word to borrowing an argument without a citation. Most schools treat it as a serious academic offense, with penalties from a failing grade to expulsion.

Common Ways Students Accidentally Plagiarize

Most plagiarism is accidental, and three habits cause the bulk of it:

What Is Common Knowledge?

Common knowledge is a fact so widely known it needs no citation — the year World War II ended, the boiling point of water. You do not cite these. When you are unsure whether something counts as common knowledge, cite it. An extra citation costs nothing; a missing one risks plagiarism.

Poor paraphrasing

"Memory is the way the brain stores experiences, which means identity is built from what we remember."

Missing citation

"Studies show that sleep affects learning outcomes in adolescents."

Dropped quotation marks

"The author states that memory shapes identity without giving credit."

MLA Citation Generator vs. Other Citation Tools

Plenty of citation tools exist — EasyBib, Citation Machine, BibMe, Cite This For Me, and reference managers like Zotero and Mendeley. They split into two groups.

Quick citation generators — EasyBib, Citation Machine, BibMe, and the AMA MLA Citation Generator — build individual citations fast and suit students writing papers. Many free versions of these run heavy ads or lock features behind sign-ups.

Reference managers — Zotero and Mendeley — store and organize large source libraries for long research projects. They carry a learning curve and aim at graduate students and researchers.

The AMA MLA Citation Generator sits in the first group and asks for no sign-up. You cite your sources, copy them out, and move on.
