APA Journal Article Citation Generator
The APA Journal Article Citation Generator formats scholarly articles into APA 7th edition references and in-text citations — authors, year, article title, italicized journal and volume, issue, pages, and DOI URL.
Enter the bibliographic fields or start from a DOI when one exists, confirm volume/issue punctuation in the live preview, then copy the parenthetical or narrative citation with the matching reference.
Journal entries break when writers italicize the article title instead of the journal name, drop the issue, or paste a database login URL in place of a DOI.
This form shows journal fields only so a website or book template never invents the wrong blanks for an article.

What is an APA journal article citation?
An APA journal article citation identifies a periodical article with author-date in-text markers and a reference that names the journal, volume, issue, pages, and DOI when available.
APA 7 lists up to 20 authors, places the article title in sentence case without italics, italicizes the journal title and volume, puts the issue in parentheses, then adds the page range and https://doi.org/ link.
Advance online publications and articles with e-locators follow the same author-date logic; use the article number or e-locator when traditional pages are absent.
In text, cite (Author, Year) or Author (Year). For three or more authors, APA 7 uses first-author et al. from the first citation.
How the journal article generator works
Three steps produce an APA 7 journal citation pair.
- 1
Add authors, year, and article title.
Enter surnames and initials in order, the publication year, and the article title in sentence case without italicizing that title.
- 2
Enter journal, volume, issue, pages, DOI.
Italicize journal name and volume in the preview output, keep the issue number in parentheses, add pages or an e-locator, and paste the DOI for https://doi.org/ formatting.
- 3
Copy in-text and reference together.
Confirm author spelling and year match across both outputs, then paste into the manuscript with a hanging indent on the reference list.
Step 1
Add authors, year, and article title.
How to cite a journal article in APA
Cite a journal article in APA 7 with authors, year, article title, italicized journal and volume, issue, pages, and DOI URL.
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of article. Journal Title, volume(issue), pages. https://doi.org/xxxxx
Basic example: Hassan, R., & Quinn, L. (2021). Spaced practice in anatomy labs. Medical Education Practice, 15(2), 88–97. https://doi.org/10.1000/mep.2021.15. Parenthetical: (Hassan & Quinn, 2021).
For 21 or more authors, list the first 19, an ellipsis, and the final author in the reference. In text, use first-author et al. immediately for three or more authors.
If no DOI exists and the article is from a database, cite like a print article without a URL when the database is widely available. Prefer the DOI whenever one is assigned.
Edge cases
- Advance online publication: note that status in the reference when required and update pages later if the version of record appears.
- Article numbers: replace page ranges with the article number when the journal uses that system.
- Special issue titles: italicize journal details as usual; special-issue information follows Manual examples when needed.
- Retracted articles: follow instructor guidance; do not silently cite a retracted work as current evidence.
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of article. Journal Title, volume(issue), pages. https://doi.org/xxxxx
Surname, initials. Ampersand before the final author.
Who can benefit from this journal citation tool?
Four groups live in journal literature for APA papers.
Psychology and social-science majors
Psychology and social-science majors
Empirical papers are the default source type; volume/issue punctuation must be exact.
Why use an APA journal article citation generator?
Four journal-specific errors dominate APA feedback.
Article titles get italicized by mistake
APA italicizes the journal name, not the article title. The preview models the correct emphasis.
Issue numbers disappear
Many graded rubrics expect (issue) after volume. Dedicated issue fields reduce omissions.
Database URLs replace DOIs
Proxy links break for readers outside campus. DOI URLs are the durable identifier.
Author lists follow outdated caps
Stopping at seven names is an APA 6 habit. This tool follows APA 7’s twenty-author rule.

APA journal article citation FAQ
No. Italicize the journal name and the volume number, not the article title. The article title appears in sentence case and plain font. Example: Sleep loss and reaction time. Journal of Applied Cognition, 14(2), 110–128. Getting italics backward is one of the fastest ways to lose style points on an otherwise complete entry.
