APA Book Citation Generator
The APA Book Citation Generator formats print and e-book references in APA 7th edition — authors or editors, year, italicized title, edition statement, and publisher name without city.
Choose whole book or chapter mode, enter the contributors and publication details, then copy the in-text citation with the matching reference entry.
Book citations fail when writers keep sixth-edition city lines, forget edition numbers on textbooks, or cite a chapter without the editor and page range.
Audiobook and ebook platform notes appear only when the Manual and assignment require them; most standard e-books cite like print with a DOI or URL when that is the only location.

What is an APA book citation?
An APA book citation credits a monograph or textbook with author-date in-text markers and a reference that lists title, edition, and publisher.
APA 7 whole-book pattern: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of book (xth ed.). Publisher. Chapter pattern adds the chapter author and title, the editor, book title, page range, and publisher.
Publisher location is omitted in APA 7 for most books. Include DOI or URL when the book is retrieved online and those identifiers are the stable path to the work.
Edited books place editors in the author position with (Ed.) or (Eds.). In text, cite the chapter author for chapter use, not the editor, unless citing the whole volume.
How the APA book citation generator works
Three steps produce an APA 7 book or chapter citation.
- 1
Select whole book or chapter.
Whole-book mode asks for author/editor, title, edition, and publisher. Chapter mode adds chapter title, editors, and page range.
- 2
Enter contributors and edition details.
Type surnames and initials, year, italicized book title in sentence case, and edition in parentheses after the title when not a first edition.
- 3
Copy the paired outputs.
Confirm publisher name and spelling, then copy parenthetical or narrative in-text forms with the reference.
Step 1
Select whole book or chapter.
How to cite a book in APA
Cite a book in APA 7 with author, year, italicized title, edition if needed, and publisher — or use the chapter pattern with editors and pages.
Author, A. A. (Year). Title of book (xth ed.). Publisher.
Whole book example: Kessler, M. (2020). Clinical interviewing skills (2nd ed.). Northbridge Academic. In text: (Kessler, 2020).
Chapter example: Amin, S. (2019). Motivational interviewing in brief visits. In T. Brooks & L. Cho (Eds.), Counseling methods for clinics (pp. 88–104). Harbor Press. In text: (Amin, 2019).
For e-books with a DOI, add the https://doi.org/ link after the publisher. For books only available on a specific site without a DOI, add the URL when readers need it to locate the work.
Edge cases
- Multiple publishers: list them separated with semicolons per Manual examples when two publishers appear.
- Republished works: include original and republication years following Manual patterns when required.
- Anonymous classical works: follow instructor guidance for standard translations and known years.
- Audiobooks: cite the author and year of the cited version; include narrator/audiobook details when the assignment asks for that format note.
Author, A. A. (Year). Title of book (xth ed.). Publisher.
Surname, initials. Ampersand before the final author.

Why use an APA book citation generator?
Four book-specific mistakes show up on graded lists.
Publisher cities linger from APA 6
APA 7 drops most city lines. A seventh-edition book tool stops that outdated habit.
Edition numbers get omitted
Textbooks change examples across editions. Capturing (2nd ed.) prevents wrong-page hunts.
Chapters cited as whole books
Missing editors and page ranges make chapter sources hard to relocate.
Editors listed as chapter authors
In-text citations should credit the chapter writer when that chapter is the source used.

Why AMA Citation Generator fits APA book citations
Generic forms blur chapter and whole-book patterns. This page keeps both paths explicit.
AMA Citation Generator’s APA Book Citation Generator separates chapter fields from whole-book fields so editor names land in the right slot.
Edition-locked APA 7 punctuation means textbook entries no longer carry leftover sixth-edition cities.
| Factor | This tool | Typical others |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter support | Dedicated chapter fields | One book form for everything |
| Publisher city | Omitted per APA 7 | Often still required in UI |
| Edition capture | Explicit edition input | Easy to forget in free text |
