What is an APA reference list?
An APA reference list is the alphabetized, hanging-indent bibliography titled References that documents every recoverable source cited in the paper.
Unlike numbered AMA lists, APA sorts entries by the first author’s surname (or by title when the author slot holds a title). Double-space the list and indent second lines 0.5 inch (1.27 cm).
Each entry follows the source-type pattern — journal, book, webpage, video — with APA 7 punctuation and DOI URLs where applicable.
Works cited only as personal communications do not appear in the reference list because readers cannot recover them.

How to build an APA reference list
Create one APA 7 entry per recoverable source, alphabetize by author, and format with hanging indents under the heading References.

Alphabetize letter by letter, ignoring apostrophes and treating Mac/Mc literally. Nothing precedes something — for example, Brown, J. before Browning, A.
Same author, multiple years: oldest first. Same author, same year: alphabetical by title, then assign 2020a, 2020b and match those letters in text.
Italicize journal names, volume numbers, book titles, and webpage titles per APA 7; keep article titles in plain sentence case.
Edge cases
- Numbered references from AMA drafts must be rebuilt alphabetically — do not keep citation order.
- Uncited sources in an annotated bibliography may be allowed by instructors; standard research papers list only cited works.
- Legal references may follow special Manual patterns — confirm with the assignment.
- DOI preferred over database URLs for journal articles.
